The 10 Most Powerful Growth Tools to Try in 2025
It’s nearly the end of 2024, and a new chapter in our lives is about to start! Now is the time to consider what you want to be different in 2025 and how to make it a fulfilling and successful year. If you are yearning for change, you may be looking for new ways to grow personally and professionally. Personal development isn’t always easy, but it’s rewarding, and with the right tools, it can be deeply transformative.
There are many methodologies and tools to choose from, and it can be hard to know where to start. That’s why I’ve gathered 10 of the most powerful growth tools I can recommend. They were life-changing for me and my coaching clients, and I hope you will love them, too. Some of them are old classics, and others are approaches you may never have heard of. Each offers a unique approach to improving self-awareness, personal effectiveness, emotional wellbeing and leadership.
Here’s my top 10 list, which outlines each tool and its potential impact on your life. Other than the first one, my favourite tool, they are not ranked.
1. The Enneagram Growth Model
If you’ve been around me for a while, you’ve probably heard me rave about the Enneagram. And for good reason — it’s one of the most powerful tools I’ve encountered. The Enneagram is a growth model built on archetypes of personalities. It reveals your unconscious habits, motivations and blind spots. It’s like receiving an operating manual that tells you how you function. You finally understand why exactly you think, act and feel the way you do and how other people function differently from you. The process starts with taking an Enneagram assessment that helps you find your dominant Enneagram type. From there, the system suggests a bespoke growth path based on your type, subtype and life circumstances to transcend the limitations associated with your personality type.
Why it matters:
- It helps you uncover and transcend unconscious patterns that hold you back in life.
- It facilitates a quantum leap in emotional intelligence.
- It helps you improve your relationships with other people.
- It’s a holistic approach that invites you to work on your mind, body and heart—not just one aspect of yourself.
- It’s an excellent tool to build leadership authenticity, potency and impact.
If you’re committed to profound, holistic growth, the Enneagram is a must-try for 2025. I offer Enneagram packages for individuals, couples, leaders and teams.
2. Therapy
You might not want to hear this, but I wholeheartedly believe there is no way around doing therapy if you are serious about personal growth.
Therapy is a powerful growth tool that supports mental and emotional health and maturity. Whether you want to heal old wounds or have a space to process your thoughts and emotions, therapy will help you on the right path.
It’s not a quick fix but a long-term process for engaging in essential psychological groundwork to overcome limitations associated with our personality and past experiences. It’s all about functioning well as a human being. Everyone can benefit from therapy even if they don’t have specific “problems” that trouble them. For me, going to therapy is like going to the gym for the heart. We all acknowledge how important it is to work on the body and mind, but we also have a heart, our third centre of intelligence, that needs attention. Therapy helps us look well after our heart, including its complex emotional world, and also leverage the gifts it has to offer.
Why it matters:
- It allows us to do “psychological groundwork” that helps us thrive in life.
- You can voice everything that’s on your chest in complete confidence and with no judgement.
- It’s a space to explore, process and release your emotions.
- It helps you increase your emotional intelligence.
- It helps you become more resourceful and foster better relationships
- It promotes self-compassion.
If you’ve been putting off starting therapy, consider 2025 the year you finally give it a try. Look after your heart as much as you care for your body and mind.
Therapy can work well alongside more practical approaches, such as life coaching. Check out this guide if you want to learn about the differences between therapy, coaching, consulting and mentoring.
3. Demartini Values Determination Exercise
This tool has changed my life. It is one of the most eye-opening ways to clarify the core values that drive how you live. I found it so helpful that I sought out training in this methodology by Dr Demartini himself and included the process in my career coaching book “Falling in Love With Your Job”. The Demartini Values Determination Exercise is a process that involves answering 13 questions that look for evidence of themes you prioritise in life because you value them most. Amongst others, you will answer questions about what you spend most of your time, money and energy on. At the end of the process, you will establish the top 3 or 4 values at the top of your unique values hierarchy. They reflect the actual values that drive your life rather than the aspirational values you just like or think you should follow. This insight is compelling. You can then explore ways to align your life to those core values, for example, by looking for a career that allows you to express them.
Why it matters:
- You discover what truly matters to you.
- The insights provide you with a powerful compass for life decisions.
- Knowing your values boosts confidence and decision-making clarity.
- Your core values are the key to creating successful life strategies for more success and fulfilment.
When I completed the Demartini Values Determination Exercise, I realised how much time, energy and money I was spending on personal growth. This insight prompted me to leave the golden cage of corporate life and retrain as a life coach. In this career, I now get paid for doing all the things I already loved doing for free before becoming a coach, such as having deep and meaningful one-on-one conversations, learning about human behaviour and working on my personal growth. I now use this process with all my career coaching clients who are also looking for a more fulfilling career.
You can complete the Demartini Values Determination exercise for free at https://drdemartini.com/values, but you will get better results if you work with a coach who guides you deeper into the process than you can on your own. Dr. Demartinini trained me to facilitate this process. If you’re feeling stuck in life, this exercise may be what you need to get a new direction.
4. Transactional Analysis Communication Model
Ever feel frustrated by conversations that turn into arguments? A simple request triggers the person you are talking to, and suddenly, it all gets far too emotional. You both seem to be on the defensive and fighting each other. The Transactional Analysis (TA) model reveals why and how this happens and how to avoid escalations in conversations. I teach it to all my life coaching clients to improve their personal and professional relationships.
The TA model helps us understand how communication works, how to avoid escalations and foster healthy adult-to-adult conversations. The model suggests that we communicate from three ego states: We either talk like a parent, a child or an adult. When we talk like an adult, we are either criticising or smothering. When we talk like a child, we are either sulking, rebelling, withdrawing or pleasing. Neither of these states is resourceful as they trigger defence reactions from the other person and can turn into unnecessary drama. Communication becomes more effective when we stay at the more resourceful adult level, where we remain objective and refrain from personal attacks.
Learning about communication dynamics with the TA model is a game-changer for both personal and professional relationships.
Why it matters:
- It helps us identify unhealthy communication patterns.
- It teaches us how to communicate from an “adult” space (instead of slipping into reactive child/parent dynamics).
- It helps us resolve conflicts more effectively.
- It strengthens our leadership presence and stakeholder management by improving how we relate to others.
If you want to improve your communication skills this year, this is an easy and fun tool you can use immediately after learning the basics.
5. Meditation
Yes, we all know we should meditate, so let’s remind us why. Meditation has been around for thousands of years and is an essential process in most religions and spiritual practices.
At a very basic level, meditation is a tool for sharpening your focus, calming your nervous system and detaching yourself from your reactivity towards cravings and aversions. The main reason why I listed meditation as a growth process here is because it is also one of the best tools to practise self-observation. Self-observation is key to any personal growth journey. All the good work you may have done through self-reflection will have little impact unless you can observe yourself in the moment so that you can stop and change unresourceful thoughts or behaviours when needed. This requires us to be present and mindful in the moment to instigate change. Meditation teaches us how to do this.
Why it matters:
- It builds mindfulness, which leads to better decision-making and emotional regulation.
- It reduces stress and creates a sense of calm in the chaos of life.
- It helps you witness your thoughts and shift away from unhelpful mental loops.
- It increases your resilience.
- It develops the skill of self-observation, which is essential for any personal growth journey.
- It promotes health and longevity.
If you’re too busy to meditate or find it too difficult, that’s probably a sign that you would really benefit from it. How about starting meditating in 2025 with just 10 minutes a day? Great apps like Headspace and Calm teach you how.
6. Body Stressing (Exercise, Cold Water Dips, Fasting)
This one is a bit more edgy. All my previous tips were about working on the mind and heart. But what about the body? Looking after our body is essential for both physical and mental wellbeing. One particular recommendation I have is to avoid being too comfortable in life. In Western societies, many of us have it too easy. We eat regularly, more than we need, always have warm water, enjoy comfortable room temperature and have cars, escalators and lifts to take over the work of our legs.
This is not always good for us.
You may have heard the expression that growth happens in discomfort, and the same is true when it comes to our bodies. When we stress our body regularly, we stimulate it to work more efficiently and become more resilient. Provided your doctor signs off on it, I recommend practices like cold water immersion, fasting, and intense exercise — all of which challenge your body’s limits and build mental and physical resilience. For example, if you fast for more than 16 hours, your body enters the state of autophagy when it destroys old or damaged cells to build new ones. It virtually renews your body. Or, cold water dips are excellent for your health because they boost mental wellbeing, reduce inflammation, enhance circulation and increase resilience to stress through the release of endorphins and activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. Watch the video above to see me doing one of my daily cold-water dips in winter.
Why it matters:
- It builds physical and mental resilience.
- It trains you to “lean into discomfort,” which carries over into other areas of life.
- It shifts your relationship with stress, helping you handle life’s challenges better.
- It stimulates your body to reorganise itself to become stronger, more resilient and more efficient.
If you’re looking for a growth edge that strengthens your mental and physical wellbeing, give this one a go. Just remember, you must consult your doctor before starting any body-stressing exercises.
7. Family Constellation
Family issues can be tricky, and they affect us in many ways that are not always obvious. For example, how you engage with your boss at work may reflect how you used to interact with your parents. It does not matter whether we had a happy or problematic childhood; we all had to learn to manage feelings of anger, fear and sadness, and we created defence mechanisms to cope with them that still determine how we live as adults.
Family Constellation is a therapeutic process that either processes issues from childhood that still hold you back or acute difficulties you experience with your partner, family or work relationships. It can be a stand-alone approach or a valuable support to other forms of counselling, coaching, or therapy. It is an experimental process that involves re-enacting or constellating family situations in a safe therapeutic space to gain new insights and release emotions.
Why it matters:
- It reveals hidden dynamics in your family system that affect your life.
- It helps you process unresolved family issues that still influence your behaviour.
- It’s a profound, often emotional experience that brings clarity and closure.
- It raises your compassion and emotional intelligence.
If “family stuff” seems to keep repeating in your life, this is a powerful approach to work through these themes.
8. ManKind Project (for Men Only)
This one’s for the men out there. The ManKind Project is a 3-day intensive experience that challenges you physically, mentally and emotionally. The idea behind the concept was to recreate an experience that brings us into manhood, similar to the initiation rituals that tribal communities once offered to young men entering adulthood. It’s designed to push you beyond your limits, claim your power and face your shadow side, all while being energetically held by a community of like-minded men. It’s suitable for men of all ages and sexual orientations.
Why it matters:
- It builds emotional intelligence in men (which society rarely teaches).
- It creates a sense of brotherhood and connection.
- It challenges you to face fears, doubts and insecurities in a powerful, supportive setting.
- It promotes self-compassion, self-accountability and self-empowerment.
Whilst the programme could do with a bit of an update from is Jungian-based approach, I strongly recommend it if you struggle to own or harness the power of your masculinity or crave more depth, authenticity and emotional resilience. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will make you a better father, spouse and friend.
Two organisations offer similar events for women, but I cannot vouch for them. They are https://womanwithin.org.uk/ and https://womeninpoweruk.com/. I am unaware of a similar programme for non-binary people.
9. Smart Annual Planning (Visualisation, Goal Setting and Life Design)
Many people set New Year’s resolutions every year. But if you’re serious about your growth in 2025, I suggest something more granular, specific and structured. I designed an annual planning process for consciously designing your life by clarifying what you want, mastering SMART goals setting and creating a plan to achieve your goals.
I complete this process every New Year’s Eve. I reflect on my achievements in the last year and ask myself what needs to happen over the next 12 months in each of the key areas of my life so that I will look back at a fantastic year next New Year’s Eve. I then set specific goals for the coming year in each key area of my life, such as career, wellbeing, relationships, friends, learning, finances and hobbies. This exercise has become an annual ritual that helps me be more conscious about living the life I want and more effective in hitting my goals.
If you’ve never created an annual life plan, 2025 is the perfect year to start. I created a workbook that takes you through the process step-by-step. Click here to download it for FREE.
Why it matters:
- It shifts you from reactive living to proactive life design.
- It increases clarity, purpose and motivation.
- It keeps you focused on what matters most instead of drifting aimlessly.
- It provides you with a clear plan for creating a life you love
10. “The Work” by Byron Katie
If you’ve ever felt stuck in negative thoughts, Byron Katie’s “The Work” method is your way out. It’s a life-changing process of challenging your thoughts with five simple questions. You will learn that many thoughts that trouble you are based on an incomplete or flawed perception of reality. There are other resourceful angles to explore that give you a better life experience. Once you learn the process, you’ll have a tool to disempower your negative thoughts and free yourself from mental suffering.
Why it matters:
- It reveals that many of our “problems” result from our distorted perception of life.
- It provides a method to question our thoughts and find peace.
- It creates an immediate shift in perspective, often bringing a sense of relief and refreshing new insights.
This tool can create lasting change when you’re tired of being stuck in negative thought patterns. It’s fantastic for working at the cognitive level, but don’t use it as a replacement for emotional work, for example, therapy or coaching. If you bypass emotional work, you may sweep important issues under the carpet instead of resolving them.
Which Tool Will You Choose for 2025?
Each of the tools I described in this article offers a powerful path to growth — whether that’s through raising your emotional intelligence, increasing your physical resilience or promoting your well-being. While you don’t need to try all of them, even one can spark a massive change.
If you’re ready to explore these tools and create a bespoke growth plan, I’m here to help. You can book a FREE Discovery Call with me, and we can discuss which tools will have the most significant impact on your goals in 2025.
